What hyperbaric oxygen therapy is

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a treatment in which a person breathes oxygen inside a sealed chamber while the surrounding air pressure is held above normal atmospheric levels. Under that elevated pressure the lungs take in significantly more oxygen than they would at ordinary pressure, and the bloodstream carries it through the body.

SESSION FLOW

How a session works

A session follows the same basic sequence regardless of chamber type. You enter and settle in, and the session begins as the pressure inside the chamber rises gently from ambient to the target level.

As the pressure builds, the lungs take in more oxygen than they can at normal air pressure. That oxygen dissolves into the blood plasma and is carried to tissues that can be harder to supply under ordinary conditions. At the end, the chamber is brought back down to normal pressure before you step out.

Operating pressure, session length and frequency depend on the chamber and the intended use, and are set by the operator or a supervising professional - not by the equipment alone.

CHAMBER TYPES

The main chamber types

This site documents three chamber formats, each with its own reference page. Monoplace chambers treat a single person at a time. Multiplace chambers hold several people in one pressurized room - among the manufacturers profiled here, stated capacities reach up to 24 persons. Soft-sided (mild) chambers, often called mHBOT, are the portable, lower-pressure format designed for home and wellness use.

One number shows how wide the field is: across the 16 manufacturer profiles on this site, stated operating pressures span 1.1 to 21 ATA depending on format and intended use. That is why we state the exact pressure range on each individual profile instead of quoting a 'typical' figure per format.

Certification: what to verify before buying

Certification requirements differ by region. Relevant frameworks include FDA 510(k) clearance in the United States, CE marking and EUDAMED registration in Europe, plus engineering and quality standards such as ASME PVHO-1 and ISO 13485. These frameworks are the baseline a serious procurement decision starts from.
